Website Advice

How often should a website be updated?

Security, content and design updates run on three different timelines. Here is a realistic rhythm for each.

There is no single answer, because updating a website covers a few very different jobs, each on its own timeline.

Three different kinds of updating

Security and software updates are the invisible work: patches, certificate renewals, backups. Ongoing, checked at least monthly, critical patches applied immediately.

Content updates cover new articles, service information, pricing, promotions and fresh project photos. Small touch-ups monthly, larger additions every few weeks if you are using content for SEO. Stale content is a trust problem as much as an SEO one.

Design and structural updates are the big job. Every three to five years for most small businesses, or sooner if the business has meaningfully changed.

Signs you are overdue

  • It does not work properly on a phone
  • It takes more than a few seconds to load
  • The design looks dated next to competitors
  • You are reluctant to send someone the link
  • The business has changed but the website has not
  • You cannot update it yourself and do not know who can
  • It has not been touched in over two years

Why this matters for SEO

Google pays attention to signals of an actively maintained site: reasonably fresh content, working links, decent performance and security. A site left untouched for years tends to slowly lose ground even when nothing has technically broken. See how long does SEO take for how that plays out over time.

A realistic rhythm

  • Monthly: apply software updates, monitor uptime, refresh outdated details
  • Quarterly: add new content, a project update or fresh testimonials
  • Annually: full audit of broken links, page speed and the SEO checklist
  • Every three to five years: consider a redesign or rebuild

Update or rebuild?

If the structure and technology still hold up and the issues are content or minor design, an update is enough. If it is slow, hard to manage or not mobile-friendly, a rebuild is usually better value long term.
